Game Review: Humblebrag

When I want to play a game that gets everyone to the table together there are a lot of really good party games that fit that bill. But sometimes you want to get away from the table, sit around a couch or group setting a little more formal and have a good time with a game. Today we are going to look at a game that can be played with just about any size group just about anywhere-and see if that is a game you need to check out with your family and friends!

Humblebrag is published by Cut Games and plays 3-8 players or multiple players as teams. It plays in approximately 30-45 mins and is for ages 13+. It is designed by David Malki, Nate Murray and Nate Weisman.

Gameplay:

In Humblebrag players play as a team or individuals trying to boast about how much they know on a particular subject. Play a card from your hand and claim a number of how many of those you could name in 60 seconds. Maybe the card you play says you can name _______ # of pasta shapes. You say 5. Other players after you must call you and make you name that amount in 60 seconds or they have to play a card from their hand increasing the boast. Maybe their card says they have to name ____ # of Simpson characters.

Now the next player has the same decision: call them or keep going! The player who is called on their claim must rattle off the amount they said in 60 seconds or less to win the round! Win and the challenger takes cards into their hand but lose and those players that challenged must take cards back. Play continues until someone has lost all of their cards and they are the winner!

The game plays at a quick pace and moves well with both individuals and teams of players in our experience. We have seen games last anywhere from 15 minutes to up to 45 minutes but it really flowed well in game time.

Impressions:

This at its core is a bluffing game designed to add trivia as your main bluff. The game in the game is trying to determine what the players on the other side of the table or team know and don’t know. If the bidding gets too large it’s easy to assume that the other player is bluffing but be careful-some of the categories are so niche that they may actually know what they are claiming! We had one card that asked for astronauts, that was way tougher than we expected and just barely got it with 5 players. But another one asked for Marvel Villains and I was able to knock out 20 in 60 seconds! Bid, bluff and BS your way through this one for the team or player win!

We played with teens and adults and I think that’s the perfect mix. I wouldn’t suggest it for younger kids as the trivia aspect can be tough for them to have enough information to pull from. But with mixed teens and up it’s a good fit and one that will keep the challenges and laughs at the table!
