Game Review: Cattywampus

Do you like to play drawing games? I know sometimes at our game nights drawing and artistic skills are not what people love to do because perhaps you are not as confident about the way you love to draw a zebra or turtle. But what if we could partner up and the drawing is done blindly in two halves? What if the whole is only as good as we can do our half and combine them together? Today we are going to look at game that does just that!

Cattywampus is a game designed by Tony Lawhorne with art by Tony DeVito and Brian Robertson. It is published by 3WS Games and plays 3+ players in approximately 20 mins.

Overview

In Cattywampus players will work together to draw a picture for others to guess but the trick is they will work as two and combine the results! Others try to guess the secret words that inspired the new piece and correct guesses score points for the team.

Gameplay

To start you shuffle the two decks, one Catty and one Wampus deck. One player receives the left board and another the right. The left player takes a Catty card and the right a Wampus card. Each artist picks a word then switches cards and tells the other artist what word they picked. Then it’s time to draw!

The artists must now draw as the left artist draws the left side and the right artist draws the right. You cannot speak or look at each other’s drawings while this is going. When the artists finish drawing or the timer runs out the artists drop their markers and combine their half-drawings and show them to the other players.

Without any help, the artists have three guesses to identify the Catty and Wampus words that inspired the art. Guess both words and the round ends. If after guesses they have not gotten both the round is over. The players gain collective points based on correct guesses. After each round, stack the cards players guessed right to see the points.

Players pass their boards and markers to the player on the left. A new round begins. After 10 rounds the game is over and you can add up all your points to determine your score!

Impressions

I love a good party game and Cattywampus takes a fun idea that I have not seen in one yet done and add it to the space. Drawing games are very popular but the idea that two people have to make their art work together is pretty funny and leads to some interesting combos!

We have played this with both adults and younger players and everyone has really enjoyed it. You don’t need a certain skill level to draw but instead the varying levels of artistic talent at the table make the game. For example, one of the kids who tried it didn’t feel confident but the combination made it easier to figure out one of the words because they focused on it more than the adult.

This game has a really good fit for game nights where you may have players coming in and out of the game, no one needs to be hyper-focused on what is going on for the turns. This makes it a great game for casual game nights or ways to play something waiting for others to come in for the night.

Overall if you want a party game that really gives some fun, light vibes and lets everyone at the table have fun exploring their combined art skills, Cattywampus is the game for you! Grab it for your next board game night and get those pens ready to see how well two people can work together!
