Game Review: Telestrations Upside Drawn

Telestrations is a game that gets a lot of play in our house with friends and family. It is a great game for laughs around the table or living room, bringing people together to have fun telling the story over multiple dry erase panels. Today we are going to take a look a new version of the game with the same name but that takes the format and “flips” it on its head!

Telestrations Upside Drawn is designed by Kane Klenko for 4-12 players. It is published by The OP and plays in approximately 20 mins.

Overview

Players break into teams and guess what the artist is drawing. But the funny part is that the artist has no idea what they are drawing! Guide your team to the most points to win the game!

Gameplay

Players will divide into equal teams of 2 or 3 groups total. Each team gets dry erase board and marker. Players pick a side of the board to use and the game can now begin! It is important that all team members should be as close to each other as possible to see the board during the game.

One player is the Guide, one is the Artist. The Guide gets the sketch board, the Artist gets the pen. The Artist is the guesser but also any other players in the group are also guessers.

Roll the die and the category is the face that comes up. Each guide on all the different teams need to see the word secretly. The number on the card is the point total that can be won that round.

When all players are ready, the round begins. The Guide is the one who moves the board while the Artist holds their pen still. The Guide may only say the words: Up and Down. These directions let a player lift the pen and lower it to start in different areas on the board. There is no time limit, and players continue to guess until someone gets the drawing correctly!

The game can be played with points, first to 20 points wins!

Impressions

This game is a fun take on the Telestrations idea with something fresh and different. I appreciate the familiarity of a game like this and that makes it easy to introduce to players who already know Telestrations. I also like the ease of getting a game like this set up and taught-grab the boards and the pens, and we are good to go!

I really like the hints on the board which allow you to add hot or cold, sounds like or tell the guessers to narrow or widen their scope on their guess. the categories being on the board are helpful too, sometimes players just needed to be reminded of what they were guessing about again!

This game does require people to be a little closer together as you are working in groups. Unlike Telestrations where you can spread out and take up room comfortably this one needs people up close to see the drawing that is being made. Not better or worse, just different than what most are used to for this game.

Overall Telestrations Upside Drawn is a fun take on this game and one I will have in my party game mix for quite some time. I really enjoy the fun and hilarity that this brings around the table for friends and family. Take the time to get this one to the table at your next get-together and have fun watching the crazy drawings that are bound to happen!
