Game Preview: Fruit Island

Fruit Island is a new board game designed by Reiner Knizia for 2 to 4 players that is currently on Kickstarter and we got a chance to check it out over here on our channel! The artist is Cesar Ayala and it’s published by Analog Game Studios and is releasing on Kickstarter on June 9th, 2026. The game is designed for players ages 6 and up and typically lasts about 15 to 20 minutes.

Overview and Gameplay:

Players take the roles of monkeys moving around an island to gather fruit while ducking around the risk posed by a roaming gorilla who wants to chase you down and snatch all of your haul!

To set up the game, the island board is prepared with fruit tokens placed in designated locations. Each player receives a monkey piece and places it on the trading post in the center of the board. The gorilla figure is placed on any space of the circular track.

During play, players draw a token from the bag and reveal it, either drawing a gorilla token or a fruit token. Then they move their monkeys around the island to collect fruit from different spaces. On their turn a player decides how to use movement to reach fruit-bearing locations and gather tokens. The collected fruit contributes to a player’s score, but players must balance acquiring additional fruit with the danger created by the gorilla’s movement.

The gorilla travels around the island and can interfere with players’ plans if it ends its movement on a space occupied by a player. Each caught player must discard all of their face-up fruit tokens into the box. This creates a push-your-luck element in which players decide whether to continue pursuing more fruit or secure what they have already collected.

Player interaction occurs through competition for fruit locations and the gorilla’s position. The island track is a loop and fruit is added all over in reach of different players at different times, meaning that decisions by one player can affect the opportunities available to others. Timing and positioning are important, as you attempt to maximize fruit collection while avoiding setbacks caused by the gorilla.

If you end your turn on a trading post you can bank your collected face-up fruit tokens. The game ends when a player must draw a token but the bag is empty, after which everyone totals all the fruit they have collected. The player with the highest score wins the game!

Impressions:

Fruit Island is a cute game with fun art that is a good introduction to both collection and push your luck mechanics. I think this game would be great for families to show young kids, as this is pretty easy to understand and play with no reading required to play. The monkey and gorilla tokens are cute and pop off the board as well.

Knizia is synonymous with some of the best bag draw and push your luck games and I think this would be an easy way to introduce those mechanics to new players or young players. It’s a great stepping stone to more complex games if desired or in itself a way to experience his strengths in a quicker and easier to get to the table game.

So if you love games from Knizia and some push your luck mixed into your games, it’s time to check our Fruit Island from Analog Game Studios. So grab your favorite monkey or two and put this game on the table for your next family game night! Make sure to check out their Kickstarter and see if this is going to be the next game in your collection!
