Review: Bananya

Card games are an easy addition to any game night and for our family they are often the bridge to the gap of bringing new gamers to the table. Today we are going to look at a card game that could help you do just that at your next get together!

Bananya is designed by Chelsea Schwartz, published by Japanime Games in 2022. It plays 2-4 players in 20-30 min game time.

Gameplay:

The gameplay in this one is simple: be the first player to have all of the ten different Bananyas. Players achieve this through drawing and then playing a card from their hand, taking the action and then checking their hand status. Play continues clockwise until a winner is determined.

To begin, each player is given a hand of seven cards. Return the other cards to the center of the table. Then starting with the first player, players will draw a cards from either the top of the draw stack or the litter box (aka the discard pile). The active player then chooses to either play that card or any card from their hand. Once the effects of the card are resolved play continues clockwise to the next player.

The game continues with players drawing a card from the stack or litter box and then playing a card until someone shouts “NYA” and shows all 10 different Bananya cards. This player is the winner!

Impressions:

Bananya is a simple card game that is going to be a hit for younger players or players that prefer a light card game on the table. The art is cute, based on an animae that has been a fan-favorite for over 7 years. For those that love the show, this is an easy yes for you to try out. The characters are cute and the cards show off some of the favorites.

As far as gameplay goes, this game is very light and relies on a lot of luck-based draws and plays of the cards in your hand. As you play the cards, you are trying to move certain cats into your hand, from your hand to the discard pile or take ones from other players to add to yours. The game moves quickly, usually over in the 15-20 min timeframe.

This game is one that I could see younger players that can read enjoying as it plays quick and cute. I wouldn’t recommend this one to hard-core gamers but it instead would work well for families, casual gamers or something to play as a filler.

This game comes in a simple travel box and there are numerous expansion packs with more kittens and bananas to add to your deck. For the player who loves cute animals and easy to understand card games this is a game that you should check out!
