2019 Origins: Brotherwise Games

One of my favorite game publishers at any convention is Brotherwise Games. I have helped demo games for them at Origins, GenCon, and PAX Unplugged in the past. This was my first time in years, where I was attending a gaming convention and not helping demo for Brotherwise. I met up with the company’s co-owner, Chris O’Neal, and picked his brain for a bit.

Brotherwise put themselves on the map years ago with Boss Monster. Last year saw the release of a new expansion, Rise of the Minibosses. There’s nothing new in the world of Boss Monster, and it looks like it might stay that way for a while. Chris said he wants to make sure Brotherwise isn’t just known as “the Boss Monster company”. So what else do they have going on?

Call to Adventure is their newest title. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Call to Adventure was released earlier this year, and you can check out our review HERE. The game’s first expansion, Name of the Wind, based on The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, looks to be coming out this Fall. The next expansion, The Stormlight Archives, based on the book series of the same name by Brandon Sanderson, is slated for 2020 and will be a stand alone game.

The one brand new thing Brotherwise was able to show off was an expansion for Unearth. You can read our review of the base game, HERE. The expansion is called, The Last Tribe. This expansion will actually be a 3-in-1 expansion. The first part contains some new game mechanics, including new Delver and Ruin cards, as well as new Stones for building Wonders. The next part has everything you will need for a 5th player. And the final part of the expansion introduces a solo mode. The Lost Tribe expansion will be a day one purchase for me. I think the base version of the game really shines at higher player counts, and being able to add a 5th player will only enhance this.

So, with no new releases for Boss Monster, and expansions for both Unearth and Call to Adventure hitting shelves in the next couple months, what exactly is Brotherwise doing? In late 2019 / early 2020, Brotherwise Games will be launching a Kickstarter campaign for a completely new game! I wasn’t given any details, mostly because things aren’t finalized, and a lot can change between now and then. Given their track record, especially with recent releases Unearth and Call to Adventure, I’ll definitely be keeping room in the gaming budget for that one.
