Game Review: Marvel Remix

Its time to gather together some of the best heroes, allies and villains in the Marvel Universe as we explore the newest game to drop into the comic book world we all know and love!

Marvel Remix is the newest game from Wizkids set in the wonderful world of Marvel comics! It plays 2-6 players in 20 mins. The game is designed by Bruce Glassco with graphic design by Daniel Solis, Renee Lasater and Richard Dadisman.

Overview

In Marvel Remix players will use a combination of heroes and adjacent skills along side of villains to create the best combination in your hand to win!

Gameplay

Marvel Remix comes with 61 Remix cards and 18 Villain cards that are separated into two decks. Each player begins with six Remix and one Villain card and takes one action each turn. You can draw a card from either deck or from the combined discard pile, then you must discard one of your cards to that middle discard pile. The game ends when there are ten cards in the discard pile.

That is the basic gameplay of Remix, but let’s talk about what you need to do. The Remix cards are heroes, allies, locations, conditions, maneuvers, and equipment. The Villains are just that. All of the cards have a base power and some have single or multiple tags or symbols that note their affiliations and powers.

While you are adding and taking cards from your hand you are trying to make combinations and have them play off of each other. The only cards that matter are the ones in your hands. Some cards are looking for symbols on other cards to give you big bonuses of points. Getting the right combination is key to winning this game!

Impressions

Overall Marvel Remix has been a surprise hit for me and anyone I have introduced it to. Fantasy Realms, the game that it is based off of has always been a quick easy card game I have enjoyed and this one takes the best parts of that and adds in one of my favorite IPs. If you love Marvel, this game is a no-brainer for you. It’s very thematic in the way the characters interact and play off of their allies, equipment, locations and other things. Want to use Thor? Don’t forget to find Mijnoir if you can! Looking to play Black Panther? Find all the best cards with Wakanda symbols on them and you will do well.

The only negative I have is part of the appeal of it-the game is quick. Like super quick. It could take 5 mins to play and rarely takes more than 15 minutes. Really, if everyone drops a card right into the discard on their turn it will be over in 10 individual player turns. For some, that may be too quick and not give you enough time to develop and play out a strategy.

This game plays so quick and doesn’t need a lot of downtime or rules explanation to get going. It’s going to be the filler for a full night or even a simple one to play with the family after dinner or on a quick trip to the coffee shop. I definitely recommend this one for anyone looking for an easy card game to add to the table, a Marvel adventure or a great combination of the two together!
