I love a good legacy board game, and we have played quite a few different ones. They have a way of bringing familiar games and gameplay in a new way, giving twists and turns that make it feel like a different but still known game. Let’s take a look at Mountain Goats legacy and see how it rolls!
Mountain Goats: Legacy is published by allplay and is designed by Alex Cutler, Michael Mihealsick and Stefan Risthaus. It is designed for 2–5 players, plays each level at approximately 20–45 minutes.

Overview:
Mountain Goats: Legacy builds on the core gameplay of Mountain Goats while adding a campaign structure, changing challenges, new abilities, and additional systems that develop as the game progresses. The game can be played as a single session or as a longer legacy-style campaign.
Gameplay:
The basic gameplay remains climbing mountains with your goats and going all the way to the top to collect scoring cards. Players use four dice on their turns and combine the dice into groups that can be divided into different combinations, allowing multiple goats to move during the same turn on the same or different mountains.
Make it to the top, grab a scoring card. When a goat in in the top space they can move again and again collecting scoring cards. Only one goat can occupy the top position of a mountain at a time, so if another goat reaches the top, the newly arriving goat takes the top position and knocks the other guy all the way to the bottom!

Mountain Goats: Legacy adds goat symbols to the dice. When a goat symbol is rolled there is an ability board you can pick what the dice face will represent. As you progress in the campaign new abilities become available to choose. These abilities can provide additional ways to manipulate dice results or move goats giving some fun changes to the game.
The game also introduces something new called the Courage system. Courage is represented by tracks and will help with dice rolling management and changes. The Courage system becomes part of the evolving rules and mechanisms introduced during the campaign as you play more games.

The legacy structure is organized around an evolving adventure in which the rules and available components can change from one part of the campaign to another. As players progress, they encounter additional hazard, new abilities and even changes to the mountain! The game includes secret envelopes and boxes that will be revealed as you progress along the campaign. The campaign contains multiple chapters and can include different developments as players progress.
Impressions:
I love the movement and ease of a game like this-the way you roll, place and score is easy enough for anyone that sits at the table to understand. We have played this with a group of four, moving through the levels to see what we can discover and it has been easy to read the new rules and go.

I love a good legacy game and this one gives me the experience of seeing new things-rule changes, additions to the game and ways to make it a little different each time. The part of this version of a legacy game I really liked is that nothing is destroyed-you play with new thing and switch them in and out but you don’t have to finalize anything, tear up or destroy any cards or extras. That gives you a lot of options for playing this in the future.
The style of gameplay is smooth-make your dice rolls and move your goats to score points. The strategy changes a little bit based on what the mountain looks like but otherwise that’s the bulk of the game. So you don’t have to feel like you are lost in the game, trying to figure out what to do each time.
Overall this is one of the best legacy games I have played-tight and easy to understand, quick to get to the table and play. If you are looking for a great way to learn a legacy game and see if it’s for you then Mountain Goats is the game for you! Check it out and gather a few more goats in your party to see who can be the king or queen of the mountain!
