Game Review: Burger ASAP!

Who doesn’t love a good burger? Give me all of the goodness-the patty, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions and every sauce you can imagine! I love a good burger, and I love a good board game. “Lettuce” see if we get those both together in the game “Burger ASAP!”

Burger ASAP! is published by Blue Orange Games and is designed by Mashiu with graphic design by Mathieu Lidon. It plays 2-5 players in about 15 mins. The game contains 90 cards total.

Overview:

In Burger ASAP players are competing as cooks in observation and speed to make the most burgers and win the game!

Gameplay:

Burger ASAP plays up to 5 players and will have each player take a matching set of ingredient cards to start the game. These cards are identical for all players and each card is two sided with a variety of ingredients shown on each side. Then the order cards are shuffled and placed on the center of the table. the last to eat a burger will be the first player. They are anywhere between 1 and 3 stars, increasing in difficulty based on the number of stars.

The first player will flip over the top order card and then each player will quickly try and build the burger or burgers in the order with their ingredient cards. These are two sided and may be overlapped. You will use all of your cards in every order, and some will be overlapping and some will just stack next to each other as non-overlapping cards. You can’t cover a whole card while doing this.

Once a player has completed the requested burger order they shout “Burger!” and smack the order card. All other players stop, check the order and see if it is right. That player will take the card if they got it right and start the next round. If it wrong the other players can continue to try and build the order.

The game ends when a player has a total of 5 stars on all their order cards if playing with 1 and 2 star cards or 7 stars if playing with all of the order cards.

Impressions:

Burger ASAP is a cute, simple card game that we tried with both adults and kids. In all cases the game was easy to explain but did take some clarification and reminder about how to overlap, using all the cards and the process of claiming the card. This is not uncommon for games with a speed element-ramp up the speed and rules and details can easily be forgotten.

The speed component is definitely the key part that will either be the hook for someone or the thing that turns them off. This is a puzzle style game but the puzzle is not something you have time to solve-it’s a quick, speedy drill and if you don’t love that in a game, this isn’t for you. That being said, I enjoy speed in a game and this one felt like a low bar of commitment to try and play so even if you don’t, it’s an easy game to jump in and see what it’s about.

I love the design and artwork on this game and really enjoyed how it looks on the table. The art is cute and fun and is one that I can see families with younger kids really getting into. Players of all ages commented on the art and the cool design of the box that is shaped like a literal burger container from a fast food restaurant!

Overall Burger ASAP is not a game that will be hitting a lot of methodical thinking players tables, because if you like a game that gives you time to think and plan your moves this isn’t for you. However if you are someone who loves some speed and chaos is your games, with frantic burger parts flying around and players scrambling to beat each other, this is the short-order cook game for you! So give Burger ASAP a chance and see if it finds a place at your next game night!
