Tile laying games are some of my favorite types to play. Add some amazing art and I am in. Now what if the game puts you in the seat of an artist-making some beautiful canvas work and finding ways to score points off of your creation? That’s enough for me to jump in and today I get to tell you about a game that does just that!
Color Field is a new game coming from 25th Century Games in January 2023. It is for 2-4 players and is designed by Mondo Davis. Art by Peach Benitez.
Overview
In Color Field, players will take on the role of an artist who is creating some abstract paintings. Over three rounds, new art is created and scored based off of how well you match your colors on the board to your art piece.
Gameplay
Each player gets a player board and score marker. Place the palette board in the center of the table and three stacks of paint tiles, one for each round. There are also advanced community tools you can use to change up the game for more experienced players.
Gameplay consists of first priming your canvas with Foundation tiles then filling the Palette in the middle with tiles. Each player alternates choosing paint tiles to replace and add to their canvas. Players will choose one of the pain titles, add it to their canvas and replace one of the ones you already have. You can also just leave your work if you are happy with how it looks. There are inspiration tokens that will allow you to swap or rotate pieces as well.
Points are scored at the end of each round for the largest continuous pattern of one color from an edge along with each side of all six paint tiles. Canvases will reset for each player and the next round will be played. Play continues for three rounds and then after the final scoring whoever has the most points wins!
Impressions
Color Field is a beautiful game on the table-it looks exactly like you would expect for a game about abstract art. The colors pop and are smooth and easy on the eyes. I love anything about art and painting and this felt like a comforting game for a genre I like and don’t feel like there is enough good games for out there.
This is a tight, thinky game in an easy to play and learn package. Spatial tile placement where every turn or angle matters-think of games like Calico or Cascadia where the way you place everything matters for everything else. But the best part is it isn’t a “break your brain” style of thinky game-it gives you a challenge that won’t slow down even the worst AP (Analysis Paralysis) players among your group.
We played this one at all player counts and I think it honestly works well at 2, 3 and 4 players with little difficulty. The game was easy for the least and the most board game obsessed among my groups-no one struggled with the game or how to play it. The teach was quick and we were able to jump right into it with little down time. If you are looking for a game that is family-weight and leans into the world of abstract art and paint, this tile-laying game is sure to be a hit at your next game night! This game is definitely going to make it into our family’s rotation of after-dinner games that we love to play.
