When you first get to know a group of people, who doesn’t love a good icebreaker? Getting to learn about the people you are going to be working with or hanging out with on a more regular basis can help pull the group together. Today we are going to look at a game that does just that and see how you it can help break that ice!
“Oh Really? I Thought I Knew You Better Than That” is a new game from Randolph games that plays 2-8 players at approximately 30 mins.
Overview:
In Oh Really players will guess the preferences of the player of honor on five separate and random topics. Guess well and earn points and the player with the most points will win!
Gameplay:
Start with the topic deck being shuffled and placed in the middle of the table. Give each player a deck of cards with matching backs. These should be numbered 1-5 and one that says “I Know This One!” The active player, also known as the player of honor will turn over five of the topic cards and put them on the table so everyone can see.
Now everyone else who are the guessers will attempt to determine by placing their cards face down what the preference order would be for the player of honor. You would place the 1 card under the one they thing they would most prefer and down to card 5 for the one they would least prefer.
Once everyone has their cards down the player of honor places their answers face down with their stack of 1-5 cards. Then starting with the 5 card as their least preferred topic they reveal them one at a time. All other players reveal their answer for that topic and they score one point for each correct answer and an extra point for the “I Know This One!” card played at the correct location.
The game is played for a series of rounds so that everyone has a chance to be the person of honor. At the end of the game add up all the points each player has-the one with the most is the winner!
Impressions:
This game has been my go-to for icebreakers. There are always situations where people need to get to know each other and I have often found that a board game will help break up the silence and give people a chance to get to know each other. With Oh Really you truly get a chance to experience a game that will do just that. I have used it as a great group game at work and recently used it with a small group on college students who absolutely loved it. They found out funny things about each other and laughed through the whole thing. You’ll be surprised at how many times people actually say “Oh really?” to an answer!
The prompts are fun, there are 200 of them on 100 double sided topic cards. They range from some silly, some simple and more thoughtful and some that are a little more risqué. As a family gamer and someone who usually plays with families that can have a younger crowd, there were a handful of cards I had to remove before playing with them that would be more appropriate for a older crowd. That would be my only recommendation to check the cards before you play it to make sure they pass your test for the group at the table.
Overall I think Oh Really is likely to make its way into my normal rotation of games to play with bigger groups, casual game nights or when I have a new group that wants to get to know each other better. You’ll be surprised at how well you do know someone or possibly even shocked at how little you do know about a friend or family member! So make sure to check this one out and get it to your next game night!
