Game Review: Frenemy Pastry Party

Who doesn’t love pastries? And who doesn’t love animals, especially cute ones? Today we are going to look at a game that smashes them together and see how it plays out!

Frenemy Pastry Party is designed by Jesse Li for 3-6 players and it plays in 15-30 mins. It is on Kickstarter through Solis Game Studio.

Overview

In Frenemy Pastry Party you and all the other adorable animals are getting together to bake cakes, but each of you has a favorite flavor of cake and you are scheming against one another to get your favorite ingredients on the cakes being made. Your goal is to make the most cakes while at the same time making your favorite flavor the most popular! Players earn points by baking cakes and assisting others with theirs as well. In the end the highest point total wins!

Setup and Gameplay

The game consists of 10 Cake cards, 6 Animal cards and 70 ingredient cards. You start bu shuffling the Cake and ingredient cards into two separate decks, placing both within easy reach. Draw 3 cards from the Cake deck and place them on the Baker’s table face up and draw 5 cards from the Ingredient deck and place them face up on the Baker’s table as well. Deal 2 ingredient cards to each player for their hand to start.

Each player gets 1 random Animal card and keeps it secret in front of themselves. Players will take turns choosing one of two actions. On your turn, you must choose between:

  1. Collecting ingredients
  2. Baking a cake

Once you finish, turn moves clockwise to the next player.

For collecting ingredients, you select one face up ingredient card from the Baker’s table and place it in your hand. You may take multiples of the same type if there are more than 4. Add more until there are 5 on the table face up at the end of you turn.

For baking a cake, players push forward 1 of the face-up cake cards on the table to show they want to bake it. The active player then asks others to help them bake it or bakes it on their own. You ask players for a certain type of ingredient and continue to ask them for ingredients until the tell you they don’t have it. You cannot ask that person again once they say they don’t have it. Once two players have said they don’t have it, you cannot ask any other players on your turn. Players are allowed to lie about the content of their hand so they don’t have to actually be honest be the whole time.

After all of that, if the ingredients match the card you have created a cake and had a successful bake. If not it is considered a baking failure. Successful bakes are placed under your Animal card and those ingredients you played are removed from the game. However any assisting players will place their ingredients they played under their Animal card. If a bake is a failure all players will return their ingredient cards to their hands and the Cake card is pushed back on the Table.

The game is played until all but 2 of the Cake cards are left or if you run out of ingredient cards on the table. In either case the game ends immediately. Scoring at the end is determined by counting each ingredient card under your Animal and each Cake card. Then each Animal card is revealed and the scoring conditions on them are checked and scored.

Impressions

Frenemy Pastry Party is a fun little card game that packs some good times in a tight package. The game plays out as a fun bluffing card game with some simple mechanics on the table. It will play easily with young and old alike, and inexperienced gamers shouldn’t have a hard time with this one.
