Game Review: Astro Trash

The galaxy we all live in is a utopian dream. No garbage to speak of anywhere and peace between everyone in the universe. But when a sanitation spacecraft lost control of its cargo of space waste, every planet was littered with…well, litter! Now your goal is to get rid of all the rubbish on your planet before anyone else in the universe and be the ruler of them all!

Overview

Astro Trash is designed by Kami Mandell and published by The OP/USAOPOLY. It is designed to be played with 3-5 players and players ages 6+.

Gameplay

Astro Trash comes with the following materials:

1 Central Sun play mat
5 Planet player mat
15 Dice
50 Trash pieces
11 Trash trophies

The object of the game is to be the first person to clear all the trash on their planet. Each round you win you collect a trash trophy-win the game when you have three!

The game is setup with the large Sun mat in the middle and players placed around it with one of the planet mats. Trash pieces are randomly distributed between players on their planets based on the number of players in the game.

The game is real-time, with each player trying to remove trash at the same time from their planet. To do so, each player will roll all three of their dice at the same time and move trash according to the results. The dice are going to be either Color/Shape, Direction and Quantity. For the Color/Shape die, it will pick one of the types of trash. The Direction die will show you which way to send the trash which can be left, right, into the sun or player choice. The Quantity die will tell you the amount of trash you can move. Once you roll and determine the trash you can move, it’s time to declutter! You continue this back and forth until there is no trash on your planet. The first person to do so shouts “Clean!” and they win the round. Award that play a trash trophy and reset the round. The first player to reach three trophies wins the game!

Impressions

Astro Trash is quick to learn and gets to the table right out of the box. All of the people I have introduced it to really enjoyed it-from young to older players this game has been a hit. There was a small learning curve for our younger players with the dice and directions but the game gives you some ways to mitigate that with a little bit of a handicap to make it more even. Younger players make it a blast as trash pieces and laughs are flying all over the place!

This game does what it sets out to do-it is a simple quick game that is a great filler game or game to highlight a fun party game focused night. It does the same thing each time, which isn’t a bad thing-some of my favorite simple games do that and do it well. I can see this popping out with non-gamers especially in my house or when we have a few minutes and want to play something quick with the kids.

Overall Astro Trash is a light, fun game with a lot of action and a lot of laughs at the table. I would recommend this one especially to gamers looking to add in light games that the whole family can enjoy or if you are looking for some new fun to add to casual/party game events. So go out and find a copy for you and your fellow rulers to see who can be the least trashiest of them all!
