Game Review: Pop Com

The alluring world of advertisement is one that has caught the eye of many people in pop culture whether it’s in the movies, TV or your favorite book series. But how hard would it be to sink into that profession and try to come out on top? Let’s jump into a game that lets you do just that and see if we can be one of the advertising stars of tomorrow!

Pop Com is published by Ludonaute and Flat River Games. The game plays 4-14 players in 20 mins.

Overview:

In Pop Com players are tasked with writing slogans, creating logos and doing a variety of work for ads. The players who do the best and have the least cards at the end of the game are declared winners!

Gameplay:

Players will attempt to keep their jobs at the Pop Com ad agency by scoring the highest points for their campaign. There are a number of project cards that are placed in the middle of the table. Each player takes 2 coffee break cards, a sheet of paper and a pencil. One player starts at the Creative Director and that role rotates each round.

At the start of each round the Director draws a card and chooses a project from those on the card and reads it to each player. Now each person will sketch, write out or brainstorm ideas to pitch in the next stage. Once everyone is ready you move on to the next stage.

In the next step of Pitching, players will either one by one or all at once pitch their ideas. You can use one of your 2 coffee break cards to skip the round’s project as well. Once all players have pitched the Director picks their first and second favorite and scores two and one points respectively. The game continues until everyone has had a chance to be the Creative Director once or twice depending on party size. The player with the most points is the winner!

Impressions:

Pop Com is a silly, fun party game that is right will fit right in for your non-traditional gamers who enjoy games that are light on difficulty but high on fun. We had a chance to play at some medium and higher player counts and everyone had a good time laughing at the silly examples given.

I like the ability to draw, write out, sing or design an idea-the openness made it fun to decide each round and for those that lean well into an area you can pull your own creative strengths into it! Maybe you prefer drawing, or you want to sing a song-whatever you want to do it’s going to be your way to express the idea and I loved seeing the differences in the room.

This game also works well in teams, when we had 10 players we went 5 teams of 2 players and they could have fun brainstorming together their ideas. It’s a good way to work on teambuilding and see what people could do in the silly situations together.

Overall Pop Com is a great chance to see how you could do in the world of Advertising-see where you fit and how well your ability to sell the next big thing is and you might find yourself the best ad agent here at Pop Com!
