Game Review: Seers Catalog

I love a good card game and I especially love when it fits in a theme or setting that grabs my interest and attention. Today we are going to dive into a game that does just that and “SEE” if it is a good fit for my table and yours!

Seers Catalog is designed by Taylor Reiner and published by Bezier Games.

Overview:

In Seers Catalog you take on the role of the werewolf-defeating seers who are attempting to collect the best items for the hunt while avoiding all of the unnecessary things to slow you down!

Gameplay:

In Seers Catalog, each player begins with a wild card, 2 artifacts and 1 bonus token. Shuffle and deal all of the suited cards to all players. The cards represent the items from the Seers Catalog you are looking to order. The goal is to get the list in your hand down to less than 6 cards.

The gameplay is over 4 rounds total. Each round players will meld their cards to the cards on the table or pass. The meld is a trick and once all seers but one have passed on a trick, the table is cleared and a new one is started. This continues until one person runs out of cards, then the round is over for all players and scored.

The first player places any combination of either a single, matching set or suited run. Each player must play the same number of cards with higher numbers or pass. If a seer passes they are out for that round. Cards must go higher in value making it harder to plan runs or sets and this is also where wild cards can help you reach the desired combination.

Players go until they have less than 6 cards then must begin to play without choosing to pass. Once a player has no cards the round immediately ends. Scores are decided based on the lowest value card they have minus the cards they have left. The game continues for four rounds and then the winner is the player with the most points!

Impressions:

I really enjoy trick-taking games and find they are often my go-to grab for a quick trip, game night start or end or just in general to play with friends. And Seers Catalog is a great addition to that mix for our collection.

I love all of the Werewolf games and seeing a game that takes place in that world but in a new and unique way was a fun experience. Seers getting their own gear is a fun concept built into this card game and I love it. The art is light but still feels like something you would see in a classic catalog from yesteryear.

If you enjoy trick-takers this has enough familiarity that it should be very easy to pick up and play with friends around the table. We introduced it to some casual gamers who had a blast and picked up right away on the way the game worked. Their only complaint was the negative points but that’s a big part of the way this game scores.

Overall this is a quick to play and learn game that I really enjoyed playing and showing off to my family and friends. So if you are looking for a new addition to your card game library this is a winner for all you trick-taker fans out there!
