Game Review: Fairy

Fairies are an amazing part of the fantasy worlds we all love-elusive and magical creatures that find their place in a number of different tales of lore. Today we are going to explore a game that puts them front and center and see if we can maybe catch one of our own!

Fairy is a new game from Allplay in their Tiny Box series. The game plays 2-10 players in 5 minutes. It is designed by Mashiu with art by Sai Beppu.

Overview:

In Fairy, players try to predict the next card up in a face-down stack. Play it safe and score some points, but take a risk and you have a better chance to score big!

Gameplay:

Fairy is a 21 card deck that has a score card for each player. Holding a score card in your hand, you use your fingers to mark you score each turn. The game is played by all players making a guess on the count of three to decide if the next revealed card will be higher, lower, same suit or catch a fairy.

The top card is revealed and the you flip the next card to see who is right. Players will either score points or lose a point if they were wrong. After scoring, you start a new turn. Once all three fairies are revealed from the deck the game ends and the player with the most points wins!

Impressions:

Fairy is a simple game in a simple small box that plays in a quick to learn and quick to play format. This is exactly the pocket-sized game that is perfect for travel or taking to dinner for your next outing. You could teach just about anyone, little kids up to adults and everyone could join in on the fun.

I love a good press your luck game and Fairy does just that. You can try for the big points or try to go with what seems like the most obvious when you see a big number on the face-up pile and expect a smaller number to come next. Fairy is sure to make its way into my pocket-size game rotation and it currently lives in my backpack for the next fun get together.
