Game Review: Sausage Sizzle!

It’s time to have a cookout and everyone is invited! But watch out, because all of the neighborhood critters are on their way to try and sneak some food off the barbie. Let’s roll some dice and see how these critters can fare with sneaking a sausage or two in this new game!

Sausage Sizzle! is designed by Inka and Markus Brand with artwork by Ian O’ Toole. It plays 2-5 players in approximately 15 mins. The game is being published by 25th Century Games.

Overview:

In Sausage Sizzle players will roll dice, trying to get a set of one critter and the highest number they can roll. It’s push your luck with each roll of the dice. The player with the most points wins!

Gameplay:

Players each take one of each of the six critter tokens and place them face-up in front of them. One player keeps score and the player who starts will take the four food dice and the four critter dice. Each food die has a combination of either two 5’s and one sausage or two sausages and one 5 along with a 2, 3, and 4. Players will roll all of the dice choosing to keep one or more each turn and then re-rolling until you have none left to keep.

Once all of your dice are locked in you chose one of your animals to score. You must pick one you haven’t scored in previous rounds and you multiply the number of that animal symbols times the lowest die face you have. If you locked in all four sausages you score seven times the number of that animal! But beware, if you lock don’t lock in all four you will end up only scoring one times the amount of animals showing. So you can go for the four sausages but the risk is there that you may not score many at all!

Play continues around until all players have taken 6 turns, rolling for each animal. The player with the most points wins!

Impressions:

I love this game. It is quick and easy to learn and plays in about 15 mins. Sausage Sizzle is all about pressing your luck as players chose to push into the higher numbers to score their critters but have to be careful not to roll or keep lower numbers. Five feel good but of course a full 4-pack of sausages will give you Seven which feels even better, so how far you are willing to push your luck is the key.

When you want a quick to play game to start or end a big game night, this is perfect for that setup. If you want a game to play with the kiddos or non-gamers this fits great also. It is a jack of all trades and fits in a lot of good situations. And who doesn’t love to roll dice? I am a big fan of dice-chucking games and this one fits the bill great.

Let’s talk about the art for a moment as well. The critters are adorable and the whole theme feels light and fun. Art by Ian O’ Toole always sells me but never in this style before and I love it. It fits everything perfectly and is a game that just looks cute on the table.

Overall Sausage Sizzle is a game I will play with a whole lot of different people, have fun doing it, and mostly likely play multiple games back to back as players move to score the best they can with these adorable critters. What more can you ask for in a game? Sausage Sizzle has a home in my collection and is one you will need to pick up for your next family picnic or game night!
