Game Preview: Sunrise at the Studio

I love anything that leans into relaxation. A day at the beach, a walk through the park, my favorite craft or hobby on a rainy day-all of these give you a chance to chill out and enjoy the day. Today we are going to look at a game that leans into a hobby may find relaxing in board game form: let’s take some time to make some pottery!

Sunrise at the Studio is the newest game from Pencil First Games coming to Kickstarter. It is designed by Steve Finn, Eduardo Baraf with art from Laura Bevon. The game plays 1-4 players in around 30 mins.

Overview:

In Sunrise at the Studio you will spend the morning making pottery at the ceramics studio with friends. Molding clay, glaze, firing up the kiln and creating beautiful pieces is the name of the game. The player with the most points from completed works and bonuses is the winner!

Gameplay:

Each player has a personal studio mat with tiles that will determine the actions you choose each round. A starting project begins in your work area along with 15 resource cubes. The community area setup has challenges, projects, resources, advantages and the waste basket for discarded cards. The game takes place over 3 days and a stack of day cards will count that down as you progress through the day.

On each day, you will play three rounds divided into sunrise, midday and sunset. Players take 4 resources cards and pick one of the work styles for that round and chose it with their tile to mark the plans. Doing this will determine which resources you keep, which you discard and which you pass to other players.

Playing the resources will assign them to individual projects, completing them will move them to your completed section and earn points at the end of the game. The game continues over three days as players will complete their individual projects with specific resources or trade them in as resources for your reserve for a 2 to 1 value. Completing projects let you take more projects or gain advantage cards that can be used immediately or saved for future use.

There are studio challenges that you can attempt to meet and they are scored for the first player to achieve them at a higher point score then all others can try to score it at a lower total of points. Some of the cards also have coffee beans and the player with the most coffee beans wins the cup of coffee and three points.

Impressions:

We have played a number of Pencil First Games in our house and loved every one of them. Each one gives us vibes of smooth game, chill and relaxing while still being a good challenge. And after playing Sunrise at the Studio I can say this will be another game in the same style. I really enjoyed the gameplay and found it to be solid and straightforward.

The artwork is beautiful with amazing design and gameplay that is easy to learn but still a challenge on the table. The game is sure to be a hit for multiple levels of players and especially younger and newer gamers. I could see using this as an introductory game for those who are looking for something new. I cannot wait to add this to my collection! Make sure to grab this on Kickstarter now:
