Kickstarter Preview: Weird Little Elf

Santa is back at it again and the holiday season is fast upon us. Today we are going to look at a brand new game coming to Kickstarter that puts us in the role of the big man himself along with some of the Elves who surround him. But be careful-there might be an Imp in the room!

Weird Little Elf is designed by Maggie and Jordan Clyne and published by Atlas Games. Art is by Brigette Indelicato and Nick Nazzaro. It plays up to 12 players.

Overview:

In Weird Little Elf players will take turns as Santa and throw out a question the rest of the group. All the other players are Elves except for an Imp who must answer the question in a unique but hidden way. The first player to accuse the Imp correctly three times wins!

Gameplay:

Players take turns as Santa and all other players will take a randomized role card of either an Elf or an Imp. These Imp role cards are unique each round and will have some silly or crazy thing a player must do. For example, you may have to lick your teeth during the round, look only at Santa, say “umm” a bunch or some other odd thing that will possibly make a player stand out.

Each player who is not Santa takes one of the roles and looks at their identity secretly. Then Santa draws a question card and uses the Christmas or non-Christmas themed side. Santa asks the question and players answer in clockwise order. Players can answer in any way but can’t repeat an answer. The Imp has a secret rule they must follow at any time unless it is specific to a certain time. Once everyone answers, Santa can accuse an elf first of being an Imp.

Accusing goes like this:

-If Santa is right, he keeps the Imp card.
-If Santa is wrong, that Elf accuses another Elf.
-If that Elf is wrong, the Imp keeps the card.

The first player to collect three cards wins!

Impressions:

Weird Little Elf is going to be my new party game for all the holiday events I attend this year for sure. It was a blast to play now and had everyone in the room laughing and watching each other closely. I love how aware you must be when you play this-it keeps the whole group engaged and that is always a good thing for party games. I can’t wait to see how it plays at even bigger numbers. Weird Little Elf is one of the more group engaging games I have played in quite some time!

The non-holiday cards and questions were fun as well, they made it a game that really will work any time of the year. The questions and Imp roles are wide and many, you could play this game many times before you got through the deck of questions. The longevity and newness of the roles and questions will make this one live for quite a while on my shelf.

Overall Weird Little Elf is going to be a staple for me when it comes to party games. The game leans into an easy entry point to learn and play it for a wide variety of ages and experience levels. It led to some fun and hilarious interactions as players argued, watched and accused all around the table. No matter the time of year, Weird Little Elf is bound to be a fun time for you and your friends at your next get together!
