Game Review: Smash-Up Marvel

Smash-Up is a hit game that has been around for a few years and has seen some great characters come up in a variety of themes. I really enjoy the game and have found a few different styles and combos that work well and that I enjoy. Today we are going to take a look at a new version that offers up some really fun options in SMash-Up Marvel!

Smash-Up Marvel is published by AEG and The OP. It is for 2-4 players. Smash-Up is designed by Paul Peterson.

Overview

Smash-Up Marvel is played by each player chosing and running a deck on two different factions mixed together. Players take turns playing cards, breaking bases and scoring points. The first player to 15 or more vistory points wins the game!

Gameplay

Marvel Smash-Up has players grab two different factions that they can pick from to begin. This being a Marvel set there are a number of thematic choices:

Avengers

Hydra

Kree

Masters of Evil

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Sinister Six

Spider-Verse

Ultimates

To begin, draw five cards into your hand. Then there are bases placed around the middle of the play are as one more than the number of players. On your turn you play one character and one action at a time, but may play fewer. At the end of your turn you check to see if any bases can be scored and score them.

Bases break if the total power on the base meets or exceeds the breakpoint. Then you total up the power of the players and those with the most get the highest victory points, then second most gets the second highest total and then down to third place. In ties each player gets points for the highest level they qualified for in placement.

At the end of a players turn they draw up two new cards into their hand. Discard down to a hand of 10 at the end of the turn if you have more than 10 in your hand. The game ends when a player achieves 15 or more victory points. If teo players end in a tie the game continues until there is no tie.

Impressions

Smash-Up has been one of my favorite card games for a long time. The variety and creativity that the game has brought to my table has been one of my favorite parts. I love smashing together princess and bears, robots and ninjas and everything in-between. And with this version, I continued to find all the things I enjoyed about the game in this version still there!

I am huge Marvel fan and getting some of my favorites like Avengers and Spider-Verse in card form has been awesome to try. Lots of games have done versions of Marvel cards and characters and I think this one did the IP justice and gave us some great versions of a lot of different characters.

Also this plays just like all of the other versions of the game so it will be very easy to mix in to the other sets that have come out in the past. You can mix and smash these togther and get the crazy combos that can really add some fun experiences to the table for you.

So this game is a no-brainer if you are a Smash-Up fan already and add this to the collection you have. And if you are a Marvel fan you will also really enjoy the experience this brings. I enjoyed this and can’t wait to see if we get future sets to mix into this one to see how they all play out. Overall this is a can’t miss and one I would recommend you add to your personal collection!
