Designer Interview: Brett Fodor

Today we are going to look at an interview with a game designer who has a project out on Kickstarter called Dino Duel. We had a chance to run some questions by the designer and wanted to share a look at their current project, who they are and what the future holds:

Thanks for joining us today Brett! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello! To start, my name is Brett Fodor.  My business partner, Stephen Caution, and I grew up in Warren, Ohio and went to high school / college together.  We have been friends since about 6 years old where we met in a youth bowling league.

Stephen went on to graduate and get an MBA from Ohio State and work in innovation for Walmart for several years.  He moved back to Ohio from their corporate headquarters in Arkansas about 2 years ago to be closer to family and work for Jo-Ann fabrics.  He has a wife and 4 children who all love Dino duel!

I went on to work in the overhead lifting, staffing and medical industries in sales for several years.  I also play music in a cover band.

Let’s talk about Dino Duel. Where did the idea come from?

The idea came about when Stephen moved back to Ohio.  We reconnected by joining a Tuesday night bowling league, and before the league started each week we would play different games to pass the time.

After a while the idea sort of dawned on us that we should try to make our own game, and we started spit-balling ideas constantly.

We wanted the game to be family friendly, and eventually we came up with an idea for cute, cartoon dinosaurs!

We started a Publishing company called Plâful and our tag line is “Bring fun to life.”

What type of game is it style-wise?

I would classify it as a light-strategy / party game.  It’s the type of game that you can pick up the basics in 5 minutes and start having fun with friends / family, but to really master the strategy it will take several playthroughs to understand all the card mechanics and how / when to play them.  We wanted to make it a game that has extremely high replay value but that also isn’t too difficult to learn.

Help our readers to understand your game compared to other ones  – if I like______, I will like Dino Duel:

If you like risk, exploding kittens, unstable unicorns, pinochle, and the Pokémon trading card game, you will like Dino duel.

What types of games do you usually like to play?

I’m a “traditionalist”. I like old school games like pinochle, euchre, risk, monopoly, operation, guess who, connect 4, and all the classics, but I’m also really into some newer stuff like Arkham horror card game, exploding kittens, bears vs babies, catan, and a slew of others.

What do you think about Kickstarter? What have you learned so far?

Kickstarter is an amazing platform that allows creators to bring their ideas to life to an audience they could probably never otherwise reach.  We’ve learned that there’s a lot that goes I to prepping for / running a campaign that we didn’t really think about on the front end, like how to do international shipping, and some other small snags along the way.  We’ve definitely gotten tons of experience and prep for our next project!

Any future plans for you and your company?

We have several more games in development!  Mostly fun / party themed games that stay true to our mission!  You can sign up for notifications at Plaful.com

Anything else you would like us to know:

We love games, and we’re very proud of our first project, Dino Duel!  We’re also more than willing to help any game creators new to the industry who need resources to bring their ideas to life!
