Game Review: Kingdomino Origins

In this alternative to the original game, Kingdomino Origins includes the base game with two expansions or alternatives to play for 2-4 players with a caveman theme.

Kingdomino: Origins is produced Blue Orange Games. The game comes with 48 terrain domino like tiles, 8 meeples (2 of each color), 49 resource tokens, 10 volcano fire tokens, 4 starting tiles, and 22 caveman tiles.

The gameplay is tile drafting based on turn order of which is determined by each player’s last position on the draft! The goal of the game is to create a 5 by 5 map (in a 3 or 4 player game, 7 by 7 in a 2 player game) using the matching terrain tiles to create the largest matching terrain. Points are scored by having the matching terrain and point tiles aligned, adding up in multiples.

A slight difference in the original game to the origins version is the addition of the volcano. This allows the player to add additional points markers, known as flames, to their terrain tiles and increase points at the end of the game. The second expansion adds in additional markers to each tile that build in points for terrain tiles that are not connected to others with point markers. And the third version uses the same markers now as currency to buy additional “caveman” tiles that give bonus scoring if the cavemen tile need is met.

We felt that the game was balanced fairly well between the 2 player game adaptations to the 4 player game. The game was easy to learn and easy to teach and can be played quickly in 20-30 minutes. The different expansions to the base game added small but increasing levels of strategy that would make this a solid introduction to gaming or builder to gateway game into the realm of board gaming!

Highlights of what we liked:

+Easy to teach
+Quick gameplay
+Solid 2 player adaptions
+Colors
+Small but solid incremental increases in strategy options

This review was guest written by our friends Paul and Lydia. They enjoy gaming together, with friends and with their kiddos. Lydia’s favorite game is Paladins of the West Kingdom and Paul’s is 7 Wonders. We are happy to be able to feature them here for the first time and hope to have them come aboard for more reviews in the future!
